Great Blue Herons

The Great Blue Heron is a common sight here in Oklahoma (and around the US).

You will often see them hunting for food solo.

So what do they eat?  Their diet include fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects, and other birds. I love these birds…oh heck all birds.

  1. Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me where exactly is the Great Blue Heron Rookery. I love to photograph them myself.
    Thank you,
    Debra

    • The colony that I watch is on Franklin Rd between 12 Ave NE and 24th Ave NE in Norman, OK. There is a creek south of Franklin Rd and you will see nests in the trees. I back in to the farmers dirt road to the north. (Facing south) It is the only dirt road going north. But be aware this is less than a mile from Toby Keith’s property. So it is a possibility that a police officer will pull in and ask what you’re doing. I explain that I’m photographing the rookery of the Great Blue Heron. They are cool with that.
I hear there is a colony of 25 to 30 nests on Waterloo Road 3/4 of a mile east of Highway 74. I’ve never been there, but that would be neat to check out as well.
They usually start nesting mid February. The herons are amazing birds. Good luck, and let me know if you get any good photos.
